Story: Australian Sweet Lupins
Airdate: Ep. 8, 16 June 2019
Presenter: Stuart Laws

As West Aussies become more health conscious, the demand for alternatives for wheat-based products continues to rise. Stuart heads to a Lupin farm, to find out about a great gluten-free alternative.

  • 30% of Australians have eliminated wheat-based products completely from their diets
  • 4 hours north of Perth, West Casurina has the perfect Mediterranean style climate for growing the gluten free seeds called lupins
  • 6th generation farmers, the Kitto family, are dedicated to bringing the best quality lupins to the public with their delicious gluten-free My Provincial Kitchen products
  • Farmer Robert Kitto produces wheat, lupins and canola on his 11 thousand hectares of land
  • With their hundreds of year’s worth of farming knowledge, the Kitto family are able to lean on their past experiences through tough harvesting seasons
  • Lupins are a pivotal crop for the Kitto family as it is integral to the crop rotation program
  • The lupin is a tap rooted plant and has the ability to grow down through the sandy soil and when it dies it frees up the soil for the next crop to grow down into the soil
  • Lupins are very nutrient dense, containing 37% protein, 42% fibre and only 6% carbs
  • They are a good source of vitamin B, potassium, iron and magnesium
  • Lupins assist with good gut health as they are naturally pre-biotic and help with digestion.
  • Tanya Kitto developed a range of lupin-based products to make lupins more accessible to the public under the My Provincial Kitchen label
  • They have produced self-raising lupin flour and a wholemeal lupin flour to swap out your usual flours
  • Tanya also developed a range of lupin-based packet cakes including brownies, pancake mix, savoury muffin mix and a raspberry and white chocolate loaf
  • As well as the farming enterprise, the Kitto’s have a milling company which mills their lupin flour on site so their whole business model allows them to keep accountable for the quality gluten-free product they produce
  • If you’re a celiac, or just after a healthier version of you, look for the lupin!
