Super foods: Avocado

Episode: 2
Broadcast: 20th June 2015
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Fresh produce is not only tasty; it is very good for you. Trevor teams up with Dr. Duncan Jefferson to show how growing an avocado tree in your garden can benefit overall diet health.

  • The avocado is a tree that is native to Mexico and Central America; they are cultivated in tropical and Mediterranean climates throughout the world.
  • Avocados thrive in a climate without frost and little wind. High winds reduce humidity, causing the flowers to dehydrate and affect pollination.
  • A typical serving of avocado is moderate to rich in vitamin’s B and K, with good content of vitamin C, vitamin E and potassium.
  • Studies have shown that avocado consumers have better overall diet quality and lower blood cholesterol levels.
